Back in the early 19th century tea started to become a very popular drink across the UK. At around the same time it is claimed that Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford came up with the idea of afternoon tea as a way of bridging the long gap between lunch and dinner. Over the years, what started as a simple meal of tea, bread & cake has now evolved to become the indulgent social event we know today as afternoon tea.
