The story begins in 1975 at the heart of Helen Dean’s kitchen, in the small town of Huntly, North East Scotland.
Helen’s original shortbread recipe was so delicious that her husband, Bill, drum major, decided to use her baking to raise money for the Huntly pipe band.
So popular was the ‘melt in the mouth’ shortbread that Helen decided to establish her own small bakery in the town to meet with demand. |

Business grew steadily during the 1980’s with more and more customers buying the Dean’s product, and it become apparent that further growth could not be accommodated in the small town centre bakery.
So in 1992 Dean’s moved to a new purpose built bakery on the outskirts of Huntly.
Although on a larger scale, we at Dean’s are adamant that we keep the ‘Home Baked’ feel, so wherever possible hand crafting processes are kept and even the same suppliers remain.
Our bakery to this day is a blend of people skills and modern production equipment. It’s the manual input which ensures the shortbread always tastes like Helen’s original recipe.
Dean’s is still a growing family concern with Bill Dean currently Managing Director.
The business has grown substantially since 1975 but it still looks to maintain it’s tradition of home baking in an age where time is precious but the appreciation of good food is high. We at Dean's, like any good baker are continually developing our recipes to meet new tastes and fashions.
All of this is fast seeing Dean’s being recognised as “The Leading Premium Quality Scottish Shortbread”.
